Vancouver is Awesome: Karma Yoga

via-2013Ask people what they think of when they think of Vancouver, and one of the top five things they say is bound to be “yoga”. I’ve already mentioned how Lululemon stores have some free yoga classes once or twice a week, but there is another place to go for cheap yoga in Vancouver: the Karma Teachers.

Here’s what Karma Teachers offers: a variety of classes, early morning and evening, from dedicated teachers who are committed to promoting the selfless act of giving. It’s true. That’s on their website, verbatim. These guys are the real deal.

All classes are by donation. Bigger donations help someone else take a class for free. No one will ever be turned away due to inability to pay. They have classes for adults, kids, and special workshops. Like them on Facebook for daily reminders.

Karma Teachers – “We’re open 365 days a year. Just in case someone needs yoga, we’re there,” says Karma Teachers founder Emerson Lim. About 15 months ago Lin and 10 yoga teacher friends decided to give back to their community by teaching karma yoga classes at a studio in Vancouver’s downtown eastside. Karma teachers offers a number of by-donation classes each day at their exposed brick, hardwood floored studio next to Save on Meats. Emerson’s passion for karma yoga is contagious and sweet. “If someone can’t pay, we ask them to just smile at everyone for the rest of the day. Pay it forward, show people how yoga is changing your life by smiling.”

Enjoy the journey through self discovery and awakening with ancient Kundalini teachings as taught by Yogi Bhajan as we focus our class on awareness and addictions recovery. Happiness is our birthright and in order to be the best versions of ourselves we must be brave and rewrite our story, break habits, release fear and heal wounds from the past. Come be courageous and open your heart to possibilities, free of mental illness, depression and addiction! Learn to let go and ignite your passions, cultivate your creativity, redefine your commitments, BE acceptance and compassion and step into your gradient grace! Every breath you take is an opportunity to create something new, you are no defined by your past or condition or addiction. You are perfect, whole and complete, just the way you are and just the way you’re not.
Amy Wutzke has practiced yoga and meditation for the past 6 years and although she loves and appreciates all styles, is very passionate about Kundalini. Certified in Rishikesh India and 3H0 trained by her teacher Gurmukh she is driven to share the technology of Kundalini Yoga to those recovering from addiction. For the past three years she has taught at The Phoenix Society providing tools, techniques and kriyas as a contribution to those on the road to getting and staying sober. It is her honour to create space for people to experience a shift in themselves, an opening and an awakening to the true Guru that resides within each and every one of us. With the power of intention and these ancient teachings we can create balance and peace within, break habits, build trust and let go of fear to make space for love, possibilities and boundlessness. “Travel light, live light, spread the light, be the light.” -Yogi Bhajan

Meet Whitney Hornsberger

1239722_10151586191616709_835490043_n Meet Whitney Hornsberger.      Fridays at 7:00 pm
We are deeply honoured to add Whit to our collective and to have Vinyasa Krama Yoga in our studio.
Hi my name is Whitney. Yes I know, it’s strange right?! But it’s true, I’m a real boy. Yoga is all about getting weird and stepping out of our conditioned comfort zones, making room for our true selves to be revealed in all their naked glory. Beyond our names, our stories and our habitual patterns of thought, the practice of yoga awakens a deep sense of interconnection to all that surrounds us. Yoga ignites our innate altruistic intelligence, gifting us with the ability to see ourselves in others and see others in us, breaking down the barriers of fear that inhibit our potential to live fully and love wholly.Yoga literally saved my life when in my mid-twenties I found myself drowning in the darkness of my own mind after a knee injury ended my athletic career. This ancient wisdom tradition has healed all aspects of my human experience and it was only fitting that I dedicate my life to honouring the teachings by sharing them with anyone open to receive.

I hail from the mighty grasslands of southern Saskatchewan and have called British Columbia my home for the past 8 years, moving from Victoria to Vancity last summer. I have recently become a fiancé, am fiercely in love with this life and have great faith in humanity and the ability of the yoga movement to leave an impression of acceptance and tolerance for the next generation. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your path and for being a part of mine.

Class Description
I recently returned from five weeks of intense study with the incredible Srivatsa Ramaswami, a student of the legendary yogi Sri. T. Krishnamacharya for 33 years. The method of yoga that Krishnamacharya taught to Ramaswami and in turn was taught to me over this past summer is known as Vinyasa Krama.

What is Vinyasa Krama Yoga?
Vinyasa Krama Yoga is an ancient practice of physical and spiritual development. It is a systematic method to study, practice and adapt yoga. This vinyasa krama (movement and sequence methodology) approach to yogasana practice is unique to all of yoga. By integrating the functions of mind, body and breath in the same time frame, a practitioner will experience the real joy of the yoga practice. Each of the important postures is practiced with many elaborate vinyasas (variations and movements). Each vinyasa is linked to the next one by a succession of specific transitional movements, synchronized with the breath. The mind closely follows the slow, smooth, deliberate ujjayi yogic breathing; and the yoking of the mind and body takes place with the breath acting as the harness. – Srivatsa Ramaswami

In our time together we will not only explore deeply what I believe to be an incredibly sustainable method of asana inquiry but we will also incorporate the practices of pranayama and meditation and examine the importance of linking the three – asana, pranayama, meditation in one’s daily practice.

Class Description:
Backbends represent a celebration of the heart. Join us for a 30 minute Power Vinyasa practice with a focus on opening into Eka Pada Rajakapotasana 1 (King Pigeon 1).

About Randy Chu:
I am a self-professed Yoga Mutt, having practised for over a decade with local and international teachers in various styles which include Anusara, Power Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Iyengar and Vijnana. The physicality of the practice drew me in…the deep inner work sealed the deal. In 2006, I saddled up and completed my first teacher training program with the intention to do for my students what my teachers have done for me. Although my approach is light hearted, the deep gratitude and respect that I have for this practice is unquestionable. I look forward to seeing you in class. Be prepared to sweat, laugh, play and dig a little deeper into the relationships within. — with Randy Choo Choo Train at Karma Teachers.
